SMILE

SMILE

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is one of the most frequently performed modern laser procedures worldwide. Compared to other laser techniques, it offers a more comfortable recovery process. A detailed eye examination is performed before the procedure. Contact lens users must stop wearing lenses at least 2 weeks prior to surgery. As with all laser procedures, patients should avoid makeup, perfume, and creams before surgery. Patients should not come alone and must have a companion.

What is SMILE Laser Surgery and How is it Performed?

During this procedure, the epithelial layer on the surface of the eye is not touched. No flap is created as in LASIK. A small piece of tissue called a lenticule is created within the cornea using a laser and removed through a 2–4 mm micro-incision. The procedure takes approximately 5 minutes and is painless.

Advantages and Limitations of the SMILE Method

SMILE is highly effective in treating myopia and astigmatism. Postoperative discomfort is minimal. Vision usually begins to improve the next day and stabilizes within the first week.
However, its effectiveness in hyperopia is limited. It may not be suitable for patients with very thin corneas.

Compatible with Technological Advances

Advanced eye-tracking systems ensure that the laser remains precisely focused even if the patient moves their eye. This increases procedural safety.

Doctor-Patient Communication During the SMILE Process

As with all laser procedures, clear communication between doctor and patient is essential. Existing medical conditions and medications must be evaluated before surgery. Regular follow-up visits increase treatment success.
